So I started school this monday. The weekend before, I must admit that I was happy to go back to school again. The idea of finishing my degree makes me excited. All of a sudden, this motivation to finish this and study hard appeared out of nowhere. Unfortunately, it lasted only till monday afternoon.
Monday's class is supposed to be the easiest in the degree. You have to be present in class, write about 10 pages of report, and an oral presentation. Well, everything turned wrong when the teacher said :' ok it's time you make up your team and find a subject for your project'. Everyone in the class stood up and looked around. I found one classmate(let's call her B that I used to work with before and we were really happy to see each other. We hugged and then we chatted a bit. Then I saw another girl , an acquaintance (let's call her P), and she joined us. The whole issue was about what topic we have to choose for the project. I suggested 'discrimination in insurance' but the girls weren't comfortable with. So P suggested 'financial crisis on pension plan'. I didn't have any issue on that topic because I took a course concerning pension plan before so I had an idea of the information we could use. However, B was in horror. She explained that she just took that course this semester so she isn't comfortable with this topic. P insisted but I could see that B wasn't very pleased with it. Shortly after, the teacher came to us and asked what topic we choosed. I was going to tell him that we didn't decided yet but P told the teacher immediately that it was 'financial crisis on pension plan'. B started to panic and the teacher saw that too so he said that we still have time to think about it. So at the end of the day, we all left home and I sent an email to my team saying that we should continue on making a reasearch for a topic that would make everyone happy and make the final decision by wednesday or thursday afternoon.
The next day, I met a friend and I told her what hapenned. She was really helpful and said that we could talk about 'reassurance'. I was like :'yeah it's great'. I told B about it and she was happy with that topic as well. So I sent an email to my teacher to ask if that topic is ok and available.
So wednesday afternoon, I received two emails from him. One was the reply to my question and the other was to all student in the class. I first read his reply and he wrote 'reassurance' is fine. I called B to tell her and lastly I called P...but she didn't sound to pleased with it. We talked on the phone and she still wanted the 'financial crisis..'. Since I am reasonnable person, I told her that we can all meet up tomorrow to compare which is better and she was ok with that. So when I went downstairs after the phone call and checked my email. Strangely enough, I had a new email. I read the second email from the teacher which simply said that we had to find a topic by thursday evening. I opened the third email and when I saw the name...it was P. she sent it to the team and to the teacher. it said: 'I had a brief discussion with my team and we made an official decision to choose 'financial crisis on pension plan''. I was like: 'HUH? WHAT!?' Did she sent that email just before I called her or was it right after? Uqam's email doesn't show at what time the mail was sent. I was shocked.
So the next day, me and B met up for the meeting at noon but P called me that she would be late...she finally showed up at 1pm. I was starving and a headache appeared. The discussion started calmly but after each minute, the voice of B raised exponentially.
B: How could you tell the teacher that we decided on that subject? that's not true!!!
P: Don't yell at me like that...
B: I'm not!
P: yes ...you are raising your voice. But what's wrong with the financial crisis anyway?
B: I don't like pension plan. I know nothing about it. We can talk about other stuff related to financial crisis but not pension plan.
P You don't know how much work i put in this! bla bla bla
...this continued for an hour
Finally, I showed the information I got about Reassurance...and P checked it out. After a brief moment, she said: 'Ok...fine. we can take reassurance' I was relieved that we finally agree on a topic so we can move on. Before I left school, I sent a teacher to apologize for changing the topic.
I went to eat, etc, then when I got home, I cheked my email again...well guess what...troubles aren't over yet. the teacher said: 'Sorry...Reassurance is taken' Right away, I had to call B and she started to search for a new topic. I texted P and she just replied 'ok' but she called me later on and started on the issue again.
P: 'I was upset that your friend dissed my work. She didn't even present a plan or anything. She has alot of nerve...Look, if you don't find a subject this evening, I will email the teacher to transfer me to another team or maybe I will just drop the class.'
Me: First, it does sucks that someone took reassurance before us but that's not something we have control on. We just took too much time to make a decision and another team took it. Concerning changing the group, it is your own choice. If you want to change into another group or drop the class, feel free to do it. Do what you think is best for yourself.
P: But financial crisis is my passion I even met teachers to get information on that subject. I feel that you guys just want an easy topic. By the way, you don't seem motivated at all. What topic you want to talk about?
me: Reassurance. i wanted to talk about that topic...it doesn't matter anyway. Last semester, the teacher wrote topics on pieces of paper, then he put them in a hat. Students had to randomly pick one and that would be their subject. Whether they like it or not, they didn't have a choice and they had to work on it. I feel this way too. It doesn't matter what topic I am given, I have to be able to work on it. On the other hand, we had the opportunity to choose so it's an advantage to pick a topic that everyone is happy about. B isn't comfortable with pension plan. that's all.
P: well we are 3 in this team and we can't pick the right topic.
me: That can't be helped. everything is last minute.We don't have much time left to choose a topic. Like i said, you can change group if you want to. I'd recommand you to do that anyway if you don't feel comfortable.
P: ok I'll do that.
This is the first time I had a problem like that. This is ridiculous. Then I called B and said taht P would leave if we don't have a topic. So she said to give her 30 minute and she will give a final answer. To conclude, B decided to remain in the same topic 'financial crisis on pension plan'. I informed P by texting and added that if she decides to leave the team, she has to tell me. That was all last night. I got no reply from her. Maybe she is discussing with the teacher to change group...I don't know. If she really does that, I'd feel embarassed if I was her. After all, we're all adults and once we begin to work in the outside world, you have to be able to work in teams, if you just give up on every issue you're not happy with, you won't go far in life. The teacher won't appreciate it as well. As far as it goes for all other classes, it's all good. I met old friends and I have the same teachers who were so-so before and they improved this semester. I have nothing to complain about...except for that class. I do feel like dropping it too because of the drama but I tell myself that it will be over soon or later. Now i do feel much better :D
